One Book 4 Colorado was a Success!
The 2012 program was such a success, in fact, that it will happen again in 2013! While we’re busy planning for the program, this website will be under construction, but please stay tuned for more information coming soon. The giveaway dates for 2013 will be May 6 – 20.
Like the 2012 program, all public libraries and participating health clinics in Colorado, as well as preschools in Denver, will give copies of the same book to all 4-year-olds in the state. This important early literacy activity will help get books into the hands–and hearts–of young children to help prepare them to get ready to read in kindergarten.
Please join us here in January to vote for the book that will be given away! All Colorado residents will be able to vote for their favorite book out of three finalists.
Once upon a time in a land far away, every four year old was given the very same book!
Jorge had his parents read the book to him. Susie asked her older brother to read it to her.
Pete heard it at his preschool, Anh at her doctor's office, Kayla in church, and Aaron and Linda at the library.
Because everyone owned the same book, all the four year olds talked to each other about it. Pretty soon everyone in the land was talking about it.
At first I felt disappointed for being almost qualified: I have a 3.5 year old who reads above his age level. However, then I remembered how great our local libraries are (PPLD). We check out great books by the dozen, and when a book disappoints, it’s easy to return. With the convenience and selection at the library, it’s better than owning another book I may not want to read months later.
Andrew, thanks so much for sharing your experiences with libraries! We agree that they’re pretty awesome. Continue enjoying them! Thanks, Beth
